Converters

Miles to kilometres

Formula: km = miles × 1.609344. Reverse: miles = km ÷ 1.609344. Checked example: 10 miles = 16.09 km.

Pounds to kilograms

Formula: kg = lb × 0.45359237. Reverse: lb = kg ÷ 0.45359237. Checked example: 10 lb = 4.54 kg.

Fahrenheit to Celsius

Formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Reverse: °F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32. Checked example: 68 °F = 20 °C.

US cups to millilitres

Formula: ml = US cups × 236.588. Reverse: US cups = ml ÷ 236.588. Checked example: 2 US cups = 473 ml. For baking, weighing is more accurate than scooping.

US vs UK guide

US vs UK: why the same recipe, road sign, or forecast can go wrong

The United States still uses US customary units in everyday life.

The United Kingdom is mixed: shops and most official measurements are metric, but road distances are in miles, draught beer and milk are often sold in pints, and many people still describe body weight in stones and pounds.

That mix is exactly where mistakes happen.

Cooking is the biggest trap. A US cup is 236.588 ml. A metric cup, used in many modern recipes outside the US, is 250 ml.

The UK does not have a standard measuring cup in the same way; British cooks usually weigh flour, sugar, and butter in grams or measure liquids in millilitres.

So converting “2 cups of flour” by volume alone can still be off, because a cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar.

For baking, convert to grams when the recipe gives a weight, and use the cup converter above only for liquids.

Volume is not the same on both sides of the Atlantic. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. A US pint is 473 ml and a UK pint is 568 ml.

A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml and a UK fluid ounce is 28.41 ml. Always check whether a recipe, fuel figure, or drink size means US or UK.

Weight and distance are simpler, with one exception. A pound is a pound in both countries: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. The difference is that the UK often groups weight as stones, where 1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35 kg.

A mile is also the same distance in the US and UK: 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Speed limits, however, are in miles per hour in both countries, while most of the rest of the world uses kilometres per hour.

Temperature needs a formula, not a guess. The US uses Fahrenheit for weather and cooking; the UK uses Celsius for weather and most cooking, although older oven dials may show both.

A useful anchor: 32 °F is freezing (0 °C), 68 °F is a mild room temperature (20 °C), and 212 °F is boiling water at sea level (100 °C).

Common oven settings: 325 °F = 163 °C, 350 °F = 177 °C, 375 °F = 191 °C, and 425 °F = 218 °C.

Formulas at a glance: km = miles × 1.609344; kg = lb × 0.45359237; °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9; ml = US cups × 236.588.

Results on this page are rounded to two decimal places, which is precise enough for travel, shopping, and everyday cooking.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many kilometres are in 10 miles?

10 miles = 16.09 km, because 10 × 1.609344 = 16.09344 km.

Is 60 miles the same as 100 km?

Not quite. 60 miles = 96.56 km. It is a handy rough estimate, but use 62.14 miles for 100 km if accuracy matters.

How many kilograms are in 10 pounds?

10 lb = 4.54 kg, because 10 × 0.45359237 = 4.5359237 kg.

What is 68 °F in Celsius?

68 °F = 20 °C, because (68 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 20.

How many millilitres are in 2 US cups?

2 US cups = 473 ml, because 2 × 236.588 = 473.176 ml, rounded to 473 ml.

Is a US cup the same as a UK cup?

No. A US cup is 236.588 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml, and the UK traditionally measures cooking ingredients by weight or in millilitres rather than by a standard cup.

Are US and UK pounds different?

No. The pound as a unit of mass is the same. The UK difference is the stone: 1 stone = 14 lb.

Why should I weigh baking ingredients instead of using cups?

Because the same cup holds different weights for flour, sugar, cocoa, and butter, and scooping method changes the amount. Weight in grams is repeatable; volume in cups is approximate.
